Did you know? 

1. For medical plans (excluding Medicare) international coverage is limited to life threatening emergency care ONLY?

2. The Medicare Supplement covers only Foreign Travel Emergency, subject to a $250 deductible and 80% payment to a lifetime maximum benefit of $50,000?

Examples of Urgent vs. Life-Threatening Emergency

• Severe sprained and/or broken bones • Severe high fever
• Severe abdominal pain/nausea

EMERGENCY CONDITION EXAMPLES –covered

• Shortness of breath   • Excessive bleeding
• Severe pain to body functions, parts or organs

Emergency Care is any otherwise covered service for an acute illness, a new injury or an unforeseen deterioration or complication of an existing illness, injury or condition already known to the person or, if a minor, to the minor’s parent or guardian that a reasonable person with an average knowledge of health and medicine (a prudent layperson), would seek if he or she was having serious symptoms (including symptoms of Severe Mental Illness and Serious Emotional Disturbances of a Child), and believed that without immediate treatment, any of the following would occur.

Emergency Care will also include additional screening, examination and evaluation by a Physician (or other health care provider acting within the scope of his or her license) to determine if a psychiatric emergency medical condition exists, and the care and treatment necessary to relieve or eliminate such condition, within the capability of the facility.

PLAN HIGHLIGHTS

• Covers medical expenses for trips up to 180 days for ages up to 84 years old
• You can renew the policy once, for an additional 180 days, with no break in coverage.
• Pays 100% of covered expenses once the deductible has been met.
• You can choose between a variety of deductible and maximum benefit amounts.
• Covers pre-existing conditions for medical services and medical evacuation.
• Primary health insurance is required.

Also, we wanted you to be aware of the following:

• If you return earlier than expected, you can get a refund for unused days, as long as you provide proof that your trip ended early (such as a copy of your plane ticket stub.)
• You can extend coverage without incurring any pre-existing conditions exclusions, as long as you call GeoBlue prior to the policy’s cancellation date. At that point, GeoBlue will advise you over the phone how much additional premium will be required to extend your coverage and explain your payment options.

Medicare Part D

Medicare Part D adds prescription drug coverage to Original Medicare and is offered through private insurance companies that are contracted and approved by Medicare.

Premiums can vary greatly between the numerous options and carriers, therefore it’s necessary to carefully weigh your prescription costs against all variables of these plans. Selecting the wrong plan can wind up costing you thousands.

Medicare Advantage Plans may also offer prescription drug coverage that follows the same rules as Medicare Prescription Drug Plans.

Medicare Advantage Plans

Medicare Advantage Plans are offered by private carriers and replace your original Medicare Parts A and B, as they are rolled into one plan.

Much like regular insurance, you can select different plan types, such as a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO), or a Preferred Provider Organization (PPO), or a Medicare Medical Savings Account Plan. Premiums will vary, based on coverage, carrier and geographical location.

Signing Up For Medicare

To sign up for Medicare Parts A & B, most will have a 7 month period that begins 3 months before the month you turn 65, includes the month you turn 65, and ends 3 months after the month you turn 65.

Annually, if you wish change to a Medicare Advantage Plan or buy a Part D Plan, you must do so during the ANNUAL OPEN ENROLLMENT period which begins October 15th and goes through December 7th of each year. When open enrollment is closed, there are special circumstances in which one may qualify to enroll outside of the enrollment period. Listed below are the qualifying events for the special enrollment period:

• You are turning 65
• You move to a new area that is not in your current plan’s service area
• Recently moved back to the US
• You lose your current coverage (either Group or Medicaid)
• You now need a SNP (Special Needs Plan) or you no longer need a SNP

About Medicare

Medicare is the federal health insurance program for people who are 65 or older. The different parts of Medicare help cover specific services:

• Part A covers inpatient hospital stays, care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care, and some home health care.
• Part B covers certain doctors’ services, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services. Most people will pay a standard Part B premium which varies depending on income.
• Medicare Advantage Plans (Part C) roll Part A & B into one plan and have several options that may provide more coverage than your original Medicare.
• Medicare Supplements work together with your original Medicare to cover things like your deductible, co-pays and other out-of-pocket expenses.
• Medicare Part D adds prescription drug coverage to your original Medicare.

To sign up for original Medicare Parts A & B, along with Part D, most people will have an Initial Enrollment Period which is a 7 month period around the time they turn age 65. This period begins 3 months before the month you turn 65, includes the month you turn 65, and ends 3 months after the month you turn 65.

Once your Initial Enrollment Period is over, if you wish to change or purchase Advantage or Part D Plans, you must act during the open enrollment period.
